The COVID-19 or Coronavirus disease news is everywhere with things changing by the day. The most recent developments are school closures across many states, restaurants and bars only being allowed take out and delivery, or drive-through’s, and hundreds of companies who have either sent their employees to work from home where applicable, or shutdown entirely due to an outbreak at the workplace. For manufacturers, when employees get sick and have to quarantine for 14 days, or entire shutdowns take place, business can quickly come to a halt. In China, there are factories that lost an entire month of production.
This virus has been a wake-up call for supply chain and risk managers. The virus outbreak has put a “renewed urgency behind the trend towards increased automation and use of robotics in China,” says Emil Hauch Jensen, vice president of sales at Mobile Industrial Robots in Shanghai, which is fielding dozens of requests.
Jensen points out how one robot that can work a 24-hour shift can replace three workers and cost in the range of $43,000 to $72,000.
It is important to point out, cobots are not replacing jobs. They are filling the growing skills gap, keeping you in line with, or ahead, of your competition, allow your machinists to engage in more cerebral tasks vs. monotonous, and most importantly will remain running in the event of numerous employees being absent or shutdowns.
When you have collaborative robots in place, you minimize the risks of production shutting down for any reason. The cobots can run on their own and if you have a system in place where you are automatically notified of any machine issues, you can stay on top of what is happening without having to be in the shop. In some cases you can even remotely fix any issues. Or you can have one person going in to work on it.
Investing now in a cobot will get you set up for success amid a crisis. Fusion offers turnkey solutions to integrate your robots, seamlessly automating your machine shop, and keeping your production running no matter what the circumstances.
