Fusion makes every effort to stay informed of the latest advances in manufacturing, making sure we are staying ahead of the needs of our customers. In the case of cobotics (collaborative robots), it was our machinists who were sending me social media posts on these new advances asking me to pursue this venture. Their goal was to reduce the time they were spending loading and unloading parts all day long so that they can do more advanced tasks. And they indeed were onto something significant.

What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a common question asked of kids. Firefighters, teachers, and doctors are all examples of responses one might hear.  But what if that question was posed to business owners?  What type of business do you strive to be?  Answers might include best in class in service, product excellence, culture focused, team oriented, etc.; frankly, most businesses would probably desire to achieve all of those, including dozens of more higher-acclaimed qualities.  However, it is imperative a business identifies who they are and what they stand for; their ultimate success depends on a clear initiative and awareness of their objectives, strengths, and opportunities.

Growing up, I had the privilege of working for my father’s engineering company, where I learned a great deal about the art of business and design engineering. His company, Century Design, engineered items ranging from household appliances for Sunbeam Corporation to assembly equipment for Motorola, and working there directly influenced my entrepreneurial journey. In high school, I started work as a detail draftsman on the drawing board (yes – the drawing board), then project engineer, then sales engineer. Over the 15 years I worked for him throughout high school, college, and later full time, I watched my father navigate business challenges in various economies, develop incredible relationships with his clients, and become a leader that all his employees admired. I was fortunate enough to receive very valuable lessons along the way on everything from business operations to machine design engineering, and those same lessons still resonate with me today. Below are 10 tips that, even today, I still follow:

Your inventory is the backbone of your business, and not having components and finished goods at the correct place and time can put your manufacturing company at risk. Yet, many OEMs don’t manage their inventory in the most cost efficient way possible.

Fortunately, there’s an easy fix for making sure your inventory doesn’t arrive too late (or too early) to your factory floor: a vendor managed inventory (VMI) strategy. VMI reduces your storage and downtime costs by receiving parts exactly (and only) when they are needed.

Here are 9 reasons your OEM needs a VMI system:
