This November, Fusion joined the Robotics Industry Association (RIA) as a new member. We felt it was beneficial to join RIA to stay updated on robot safety standards and industry trends as they evolve, to attend industry events and educational seminars, and to meet fellow professionals in our field.
We always want to be at the forefront of automation, which is why we will be attending the RIA A3 Business Forum in January where we can network with a variety of professionals in the industry, get insights on the latest in automation and best business practices. We look forward to exploring all that RIA has to offer!

I recently went to Disney World with my family and we were able to check out the new Star Wars Galaxy Edge exhibit. While I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, I can understand why fans are so anxious to see it. From creating your own Droids and Lightsabers to rides, shops and the actual set, it is impressive. They even had a robot repair station (pictured.)

Cobot Installation: Systems Integrator vs. Do It Yourself

According to a McKinsey & Company article, “Industry 4.0 could have an estimated value-creation potential for manufacturers and suppliers of $3.7 trillion in 2025, and hopes are high that it could bring the next industrial revolution to discrete manufacturing. Yet only about 30 percent of companies are capturing value from Industry 4.0 solutions at scale today. Companies tend to envision technology development going forward instead of identifying the areas of largest impact and tracking those back to Industry 4.0 value drivers.”

I attended the RUC 2019 show in Quebec last week and what an amazing show it was! I had the privilege of speaking on a panel where we discussed Cobot Stories From Factories. We dove into starting small and not over complicating cobots, looking beyond ROI, and standardizing cobot setups.

With the growing need for manufacturing jobs to be filled, the cobotic industry is growing exponentially to fill the gap, as well as empowering employees to do more cerebral vs. monotonous tasks. The goal is to replace the least desirable and most time-consuming parts of the job with a solution that streamlines processes.

Why We Became a Cobot Systems Integrator for UR

Fusion makes every effort to stay informed of the latest advances in manufacturing, making sure we are staying ahead of the needs of our customers. In the case of cobotics (collaborative robots), it was our machinists who were sending me social media posts on these new advances asking me to pursue this venture. Their goal was to reduce the time they were spending loading and unloading parts all day long so that they can do more advanced tasks. And they indeed were onto something significant.

While the word “manufacturing” may conjure up the images of dark, cold factory floors of yesteryear for some, present day manufacturers are anything but staid.  Manufacturing in the 21st century has become one of the most progressive and in many cases technology-oriented industries in existence.

As cobots become more widely understood and utilized in machine tending operations, lots of focus and attention is rightfully placed on the cobot and the waypoints of the operation.  However, there are a few other aspects that can be missed among all of the excitement of “bringing the future” into a machining operation:

Introducing Fusion Cobotics:  Helping Machining Operations Improve Productivity!

    Posted by Todd Stukenberg

    Mar 1, 2019 4:01:00 PM

Fusion OEM, a leading manufacturing and machining services partner in the Chicagoland area, is branching out with the introduction of Fusion Cobotics.  The new venture officially “opened its doors” this year, with the expressed mission of helping the many CNC machining operators in Northern Illinois leverage the incredible technology of cobots.  Cobots are becoming much more common in a variety of production applications, and CNC machine tending is perfectly suited for the safe, reliable and flexible efficiency of the cobot.  Cobots differ from traditional industrial robots in that they incorporate onboard safety measures that allow them to be in place, side-by-side, with human counterparts.  In a machining environment, that means that the Cobot “worker” can work simultaneously in the same work center as a skilled machinist performing setup and checking part production.
